Orchards offers a number of programs designed to shorten
lengths of stay in foster care, or completely avoid a painful
separation. Orchards' Child and Family Workers go directly
into the homes of reunited or at-risk families to provide
requisite monitoring and counseling.
Families Together Building Solutions - Works to alter
inappropriate and unhealthy parental behavior in order to
eliminate the need for the removal of their children.
Families First - Works to prevent children from entering the
foster care system by providing counseling and many other
support services to at-risk families.
Family Reunification - Designed to prevent repeated
out-of-home placements and more quickly reunify children with
their families when out-of-home placement has occurred.
The Family Reunification model utilizes intensive home-based
services to achieve these goals.
Intensive Family Intervention
- Orchards began taking referrals for this program in February
2010 in Shiawassee County. The focus is on maintaining
in-home placements of children in families that have been
reunified after foster care, families that have been identified
as needing post adopt services, families involved with CPS,
Prevention, or Delinquency within 18 months of the referral,
similar to Life Skills. Service delivery is based on a
solution-focused approach, leading to 98% of families remaining
intact through the end of June 2010.
Juvenile Justice Diversion Reintegration Alternatives - JJDRA
is a required home-based service, designed to support
adjudicated delinquents as they transition back into the
community. Staff provide intensive family treatment,
face-to-face mentor/surveillance contracts and use a level
system to reinforce treatment goals.
Life Skills - We began
this service in Genesee County on October 1, 2009 and serviced
1920 units in the first year. The contract has been
expanded to 2410 units in the second and third years due to its
success and utilization by Referring Workers. These
services empower the family by utilizing the solution-focused
method to assist in formulating positive solution-oriented goals
related to conflict resolution, family planning, career
planning, self-sufficiency, education health maintenance,
environmental health, role modeling, child appropriate
expectations, and goal setting. The program has serviced
over 150 families since it began in Genesee County in October
2009 and 99% of these families have remained intact avoiding the
need for out-of-home placements.
Removal Prevention Early Return
- The purpose of RPER is to prevent removals or out of home
placements from occurring by educating, supporting and
strengthening families. RPER also assists in the early
return of children with their parents by preparing the families
for reunification.
Wraparound Services - Creatively tailors programs and support
services to meet the specific needs of troubled children so they
can avoid hospitalization and remain with their families.
Youth in Transition
- We were providing case management, educational,
employment, closed case services and Independent Living skills
training to Genesee County youth who have spent one night in
foster care after their 14th birthday until this contract
concluded in February 2011. As a result of the services,
25 youth enrolled in college or other secondary education
programs, 25 youth with closed DHS cases have successfully
transitioned into independence, and 70 youth have benefited from
a 5-week IL training course.
